Interviews During COVID-19 – A New World

It has been one year since our first official lockdown. Several aspects of our lives have been changed and we are forced to adapt to the new norm in order to be successful in our lives. It is a challenge to accept this New World that we live in. Many undergrads and graduates are looking for ways to broaden their career. For many professionals in the business world, there is no longer in person training, networking and interviews. Working from home is the New World we have to accept. Before the pandemic, we would shake hands as a gesture to present ourselves. For many reasons this has changed. Even though these new changes are challenging, it is very necessary, and it has helped us grow as a community.

Interviews are a very important component in the hiring process. It is your opportunity to present yourself and learn about the organization you are hoping to work for. Now that many are conducted online there is a change in how the overall experience is. Here are some important things to consider when having your online interview.

First, consider having yourself familiarized with the interview platform before your interview takes place. Many organizations will have their own way of conducting your meeting with them. Some will use platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Cisco-Webex, and many more. If possible, download the platform and have a small meeting with a friend to test how it works. This can help avoid technical difficulties the day of your interview.

Secondly, look presentable, maintain eye-contact, and speak clearly. It is very easy to get distracted during online interviews. Try your hardest to be engaged in your speaker and present your ideas with as much enthusiasm as you can. Pick a location where you feel productive and can focus to your best abilities. Get dressed up! Treat your online interview as an in person one.

Next, try practicing your interview questions before it takes place. If you have any questions about the organization, make sure to reach out to them. Gathering information about the hiring manager, and company values is a great place to start.

Finally, try connecting on LinkedIn. This is a great place to learn about your recruiter and their experiences. You can send a personal message as well, and mention you are looking forward to meet.

Even though the pandemic has changed how the interviews take place there are many components that stay the same. Technology can be used to our advantage. Interviews can be taken from the comfort of your home and the stress of commuting is avoided. Together as a community we can grow and succeed in this New World.
